These companies believe that technologies such as machine learning will help in automating their networks and transforming it into ‘self-healing networks’ to offer better customer experience.
Vodafone Idea and Airtel are cloudifying their respective core networks to be ready for 5G technology. Many investments are being made by Airtel in the area of automation and orchestration and is also working with a lot of partners. Additional capabilities are being built by Vodafone Idea Limited by the integration of network and IT that is also transforming billing and provisioning. By cloudifying the entire core network of VIL, the company will be able to offer many 5G capabilities on their 4G network.
VIL is in the process of merging two networks and is planning to exit over 90,000 sites to cut on duplication, thereby reducing capital and operational expenditure. Vishant Vora, VIL’s chief technology officer said, “We are making massive investments in networks. It is a great opportunity for us to put in future proof technologies…we are going to have a very large scale deployment of massive mimo. It's a 5G technology being put in the 4G network and will give a lot of capacity. That actually helps create better throughout and user experience for all our data clients in 4G.”
Moreover, Airtel is building coverage and capacity to improve its 4G services. Officials of Airtel said that more spectrum will be added by the company for 4G in metro circles. Also, they will be soon finishing its 900 MHz 4G project in ten circles. Liberalized spectrum of Airtel is being converted into 4G.
