Apples AirPods dominated earphones market with around 85% market share of Bluetooth earbuds. The company sold more than 13 million pairs of AirPods in 2017. According to recent report, Apple is working on a pair of premium over-the-ear headphones, which will be launched in 2018. The company plans on making it a standalone product, similar to the AirPods. Furthermore, the company is also reported to launch the over the ear headphone under the Beats moniker
The premium wireless headphones are expected to feature active noise-cancellation along with custom energy-efficient chipset such as the W1 found on the AirPods. These headphones will be good choice of consumers who are looking for conventional design of headphones with active noise cancellation. Moreover, these headphones will also feature water resistance and wireless connectivity similar to Apple AirPods 2.
Major technological companies are developing various audio devices in noise cancellation and wireless segment. Companies such as Bose and Sony are launching variety of headphones with this feature. However, the Apple headphones is expected to gain significant traction among consumers, owing to presence of the W1 chip with seamless pairing across all Apple products. However, there is no clarity regarding pricing of same with competing Sony, Bose and others. The product would be the latest addition to continually growing portfolio of music-centered products and services, including the company’s purchase of Beats in 2014, its launch of Apple Music in 2015 and its release of the AirPods in-ear headphones in 2016.
