Apple filled patent application for developing new MacBook keyboard design to prevent crumbs and dust from keys
Apple announced on March 8, 2018, that it is working on developing crumb-resistant keyboard to solve a simple problem that has plagued computing from day one. The patent announced by the company reveals solution to solve this problem. “Liquid ingress around the keys into the keyboard can damage electronics. Residues from such liquids may corrode or block electrical contacts, getting in the way of key movement,” mentions the abstract of patient.
Patient explains “Keyboards include mechanisms that prevent and/or alleviate contaminant ingress. In some embodiments, a keyboard assembly includes a substrate, a key cap, a movement mechanism movably coupling the key cap to the substrate, and a guard structure coupled to the key cap operable to direct contaminants away from the movement mechanism. In other embodiments, a keyboard includes a base; a web that defines apertures; keys movably coupled to the base within the apertures; and a gasket coupled to the keys, the gasket fixed between the web and the base, operable to block passage of contaminants in to the apertures.”
Recent report announced that company will be launching cheaper MacBook Air by the end of 2018. The cheaper MacBook Air is projected to increase Apple’s MacBook shipments by 10-15%
Although this may be minor issue, it is a big deal for advanced laptop priced for US$ 3,000.
