YouTube intends plans to add information from Wikipedia to videos about popular conspiracy theories, as announced by the company on March 13, 2018.
YouTube’s CEO, Susan Wojcicki, said information cues, provided by the company, will soon appear on conspiracy-related videos. There were earlier instances of information cues videos about the moon landing and chemtrails.
“When there are videos that are focused around something that’s a conspiracy — and we’re using a list of well-known internet conspiracies from Wikipedia — then we will show a companion unit of information from Wikipedia showing that here is information about the event,” Wojcicki said.
The company made this decision after it was criticized for posting extremist content, which drives more attention through algorithmic recommendations, designed to influence viewers to extremes. The information cues appeared directly below the video, linking them to Wikipedia for more information. It generally provides a more neutral, empirical approach to understanding conspiracies than videos that appear on YouTube.
Wojcicki did not specify the number of conspiracies the company was engaged with, however, suggested it would expand over time. The company would show additional alternate sources of information under controversial elements in the future, she said.
